Chat GPT Custom Magic Part #1: White Cards

I’ve spent my spare time in the past week slowly guiding Chat GPT 4.0 through the design skeleton laid out in Mark Rosewater’s excellent article on how Wizards of the Coast designs Magic the Gathering sets. I then described the cards in a way similar to this other article in the same series, but adapted for interpretation by Stable Diffusion.

Everything, from the card names to the distribution of card types and every other bit of text and numbers on the card is exactly as Chat GPT gave it to me. The only leading it had was the outline, and some prompting from me to finish its work when it submitted something incomplete. (i.e. a creature without power or toughness, or a card with no casting cost.)

I’ll begin with the white cards, and then upload another colour daily, and finish off the week with the multicolour cards and Planeswalkers. If anyone has any interest in playing this set with me, contact me on my Tumblr or leave a comment below so I can email you! I hope you enjoy the cards.

You might notice cards are all pretty underpowered, with the rare exception, but I hope the novelty makes for something interesting enough on its own. The whole set is at least hypothetically balanced against itself, and could make for a fun draft. If I manage to get that together I’m sure to record the whole thing and post it on my youtube, so subscribe if you don’t want to miss out on that.

I’m not the most experienced in set design, but from what I’ve seen in my time playing a lot of limited, this collection seems pretty underpowered with a few exceptions. Valiant Protector is a clear reminder of why Indestructible is normally limited to combat tricks and activated abilities, and Gavron asks the question “How far can you push Azorious’s removal?” in a shocking way.

Gavron is actually part of a cycle I asked Chat GPT to make to fill out the rare slots, inspired by “Kenrith, the returned King”. Each colour has a legendary creature with four activated abilities, though unlike Kenrith they are only four colour commanders, with their cheapest ability being in their own colour.

I think asking for four commanders to be made and assigning each one to a different player who has to build a commander deck around it could be a fun event. Maybe something to reach out to LRRMTG about.

I’ll see you tomorrow!
