Story Hooks for High fantasy RPGs

An alehouse is taken into Valhalla by a gang of Valkyries with the party still inside.

A dancing plague is suspected to be caused by a wicked bard secretly spreading chaos, and he’s left a clue in the song some of the infected have stuck in their heads.

An arch-wizard of illusions has made 1024 duplicates of themselves and they are all moving out in a major power grab. Though the duplicates cannot regain spell slots, they are still a threat as small units travel across the country taking control of castles, churches, and libraries.

A fledgling dragon had its wings taken by a Dragonhunter, and has hired the adventurers in its human guise to find him.

A Djinn granted one wish to three princes of this tiny kingdom. One asked for wealth, one for resilience, and one for wisdom. They are now in a ceaseless battle for the throne. The wealthy one is offering piles of gold to literally anyone who will fight in his armies or walk with his scouts.

There is a rumour that the king has had a powerful Geas placed upon him by a vengeful court wizard who eloped with the crown princess, making it so that he must allow the wizard to escape his kingdom and not search for him. Some enterprising mercenaries are looking to reclaim the princess before the wizard can get away.

Strange pillars of solid stone have been popping out of the ground in a massive circle, with each one just visible on the horizon from the summit of the ones next to it.

A wealthy art trader has come into town with a large number of servants, but all of his staff leave smears of thick oily pigment where they have been. (The merchant and the staff are the escaped portraits and all the real people are trapped in his paintings.)

The ocean tide has been receding for days, and the things once hidden under the sea are now exposed to the open air, among other problems.

A Potionseller’s stores have all vanished on the same night as his untimely death, and the family are offering a great reward to whoever can find where the potions have gone.

A warrior’s guild is on strike since the introduction of the Artificer’s mechanical fighters, which are pretty bad at fighting but cost significantly less has been picking up interest with the lords who once hired them.

A baker is needed in the capital to make a cake for the royal wedding and coronation of the new king and queen, but she keeps taking detours for better ingredients and a chance to taste exotic cuisines and collect new recipes.

A super volcano eruption has covered the sky in ash and driven countless imps into the realm.
